How to Repair ODE W Series Solenoid Valves

Welcome back to our Hydronics Depot blog. Today, we’re walking through a simple, reliable procedure for repairing ODE W-Series solenoid valves. These valves are designed for easy serviceability, and with the right steps, you can complete a full diaphragm and plunger replacement in just a few minutes.


1. Identify the Flow Direction

Before disassembly, note the arrow on the top plate beside the ODE emblem. This indicates the direction of flow through the inlet.
You’ll find the same arrow on the bottom plate.

Important:
When reassembling, both arrows must point in the same direction to maintain proper flow orientation.


2. Removing the Top Plate

Once the screws are removed, lift the top plate slowly and evenly. This exposes the magnetic kit (coil and plunger assembly).


3. Replacing the Diaphragm

To remove the old diaphragm, insert your finger through the internal port and gently push upward.

Place the new diaphragm into position, ensuring it sits flat and secure.

Many ODE valves come standard with Viton® diaphragms (usually green). These can be easily swapped to other materials such as EPDM (usually black).

To confirm the original material, check the engraving on the valve body. In our example, the valve shows an “E” marking, identifying EPDM.


4. Replace Both O-Rings

Always replace the both O-rings when servicing the solenoid valve. New O-rings ensure a proper seal and long-term reliability.


5. Reassembling the Solenoid Valve

Lower the top plate carefully back into position and reinstall the screws evenly.

You can now remove the magnetic kit and replace the plunger to match your diaphragm material—e.g., switching from a Viton plunger to an EPDM plunger. 

Note: the torque for the armature tube when assembling should be 30NM (newton-metre). Tighten all components firmly, but do not overtighten, as this can distort the internal alignment.


6. Material Flexibility of ODE Valves

One of the greatest advantages of ODE solenoid valves is their interchangeable sealing system. The W-Series can be converted among:

  • Viton®

  • EPDM

  • Buna-N (NBR)

  • HNBR

  • PTFE (Teflon®)

This versatility allows you to adapt a single valve body to a wide range of media, temperature requirements, and chemical compatibility needs.

In the video example referenced below, the valve was originally equipped with Viton and was converted to EPDM.
